What Size Dumpster Do I Need?

Choose a container by nominal volume, material weight and delivery access. An 8-yard trailer holds less volume than a 10-yard container; the sizes are not interchangeable.

A light furniture cleanout and a small concrete job can need very different containers even when the pile looks similar.

What a cubic yard means

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet: a space 3 feet long, 3 feet wide and 3 feet high. For a roughly rectangular pile measured in feet, length × width × height ÷ 27 estimates cubic yards. Irregular shapes, gaps and packing change the useful estimate.

Confirm the container dimensions, allowed material, weight limit, fill line and delivery clearance in the quote. Larger roll-off options can be requested when available. The published Iron Elk trailer disposal charge is $99 per ton, based on recorded weight. Rental, labor, hauling and any special handling are identified in your written quote. Facility gate fees are separate from Iron Elk service pricing.

Weight can limit a load before volume does

Concrete, soil, roofing and other dense materials need a specific load plan. Do not fill a trailer to its nominal volume with heavy material unless the approved loading limit allows it. Tell us about mixed or concealed heavy debris.

Choosing between sizes

Send wide photos of the pile and delivery area. A smaller container may suit a modest load; a larger one may avoid another haul when volume warrants it. Compare the complete quote, including rental period, delivery and disposal, before choosing.

Placement matters too

Share a photo of the proposed placement. Private-driveway and public-right-of-way placements are reviewed separately; local restrictions, property permission and any road-authority approval are confirmed before delivery. See the placement guide.

Frequently asked questions

How full can I load it?

Follow the container’s marked fill line and confirmed weight limit. The load must be safely contained and covered for transport; dense material may require a lower fill level.

Will a 10-yard load fit an 8-yard trailer?

An 8-yard trailer has a lower nominal capacity. Send photos and dimensions to assess packing, weight and whether a larger container or additional haul is needed.

Do I need to know the size before requesting a quote?

No. Start with the material, approximate amount and access. Iron Elk can review the appropriate container options.
