Planning the job

Replace the space for what it needs to hold

  • A shed or detached garage may be too small, poorly arranged or no longer suited to the equipment and belongings kept inside.
  • Replacement is a chance to consider the usable space, the door arrangement and the route between the building and the rest of the property.
  • A delivered building needs an agreed delivery route and prepared location.
  • A building assembled on site needs room for materials and the builder’s work, so the two approaches lead to different site preparation and access requirements.
  • Keeping the same location can preserve the yard's layout, while moving the replacement may improve access or free another area.

Treat the contents and the foundation as separate decisions

  • An old outbuilding often holds a mixture of useful belongings and items ready to leave.
  • Clearing the interior is a separate task from taking down the structure.
  • Plan where retained contents will stay between removal of the old building and availability of the new one.
